The pop-up advertisement can be so annoying that it might drive you to punch your phone or the sites and applications that shove them in your face. But don’t worry, you are not alone. Today, you will learn how to set yourself free from those joy hijacking monsters.
Pop-up advertisements are different from the ones that appear at the bottom or top of an application or mobile website. Anyone would be troubled if the advertisements occupy the whole screen and disturb the experience. Sure, you can just press the close which is the ‘X’ button to make them disappear, but that will not stop them permanently.
So what to do? You need to identify the application causing these advertisements, and then you will have to uninstall it.
Here are some simple ways to detect the applications causing pop-up advertisements. However, before we jump into that, let’s understand it in brief as to why it happens.
Why Do You See Pop-Up Ads?
Developers usually keep advertisements in their applications as it helps in monetization. However, advertisements that are in your face, and everyone hates such pop-up advertisements. Some developers fail to understand that, and since it’s a good way to get a click (required for generating revenue), they continue to serve pop-up advertisements in their applications.
So, don’t worry. Your phone isn’t hacked or hijacked. The advertisements are served through an application or some application has installed adware that is showing advertisements. Sometimes, the issue erupts immediately when you install a new application. However, other times, the advertisements may reveal themselves randomly out of the blue.
Whatever the situation, here’s five ways to identify the culprit application.
1. CHECK RECENT APPLICATIONS
The easiest way to find the annoying application is to use the recent applications key. Basically, it will show in the recent applications since the advertisements are generated from an application. So, when you get a pop-up advertisement, tap on the recent applications key. The recent applications screen will open. Notice the name and the icon of the first or the second application. That’s your culprit application. If it’s hard to identify the name, tap and hold the application and then press the Application info button, you will see its name.
2. FIND THE APPLICATION WITHOUT AN ICON
Sometimes, the applications that throw pop-up advertisements do not show up in the application drawer or even on the home screen. So even if it’s a recently installed application, you might not find it easily. However, that doesn’t mean there is no way to find such mischievous applications.
All you need to do is navigate differently. That is, go to Settings > Application Manager/Applications. Under Installed applications, look for an application with no icon. Sometimes, the icon is there but it has no name. Congratulations! You have found the rogue application.
3. TAKE HELP OF THE PLAY STORE
Another way to find the bad guy is by using the Play Store. We will be checking the last used applications list to find the application that is throwing pop-up advertisements. Since you wouldn’t have launched the same application, it’s easy to identify the culprit.
To do so, follow these four steps:
Step 1: When you get a pop-up, press the home button.
Step 2: Open Play Store on your Android phone and tap on the three-bar icon.
Step 3: Select My applications & games.
Step 4: Go to the Installed tab. Here, tap on the sort mode icon and select Last used. The application showing advertisements will be among the first few results.
4. CHECK DEVICE ADMIN APPLICATIONS
Sometimes, the rogue applications are so powerful that they mischievously take over your phone. You need to be careful while granting permissions to applications. To find if any application has taken control over your phone, go to Settings followed by Security option. Then, tap on Device admin applications. Here, you need to turn off the toggle options that are next to the application which you find are suspicious application.
5. USE POP-UP ADVERTISEMENT DETECTOR APPLICATIONS
If the above solutions don’t help you in finding the malicious application, then it’s time to call the police. Well, not literally. I’m talking about the advertisement detector applications. You can try applications like AppBrain Advertisement Detector and AppWatch. Install these applications, and they will let you know about the applications bothering you with advertisements.
Stop Pop-Up Ads
Once you have detected the culprit application, you should either uninstall it or turn off its notifications.
To uninstall follow these 3 steps:
- First, go to the Play Store.
- Then, find the application.
- And hit the Uninstall button.
To disable its notifications follow these 5 steps:
- Go to Settings
- Then to Applications/Installed Applications/Application Manager.
- Then you find the application
- Then tap on Notifications.
- Then turn off the toggle next to Show notifications.
